Usually when I am photographing birds, I can’t really get a good look at them. They are far away, or shaded by branches, or it’s just too bright outside — when I get in and look at the pictures on my computer, I am often surprised by the birds’ actions. A lot of the time they are “hopping” more than “flying.”
The woodpecker in those pictures, I believe is a Downy with unusual coloring.
